Paramedic Studies Vs Medical School, What’s the Difference?

There are many differences between paramedic studies and medical school.

Paramedic studies focus on emergency medical care, while medical school focuses on all aspects of medicine.

It’s a surprise that the two can ever be confused, however, it is also understandable since both are medical professionals responsible for the health and wellbeing of their patients.

In brief, paramedics are trained to provide immediate care to patients in medical emergencies, while medical doctors are trained to provide comprehensive care to patients, both in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Paramedics are usually the first responders to medical emergencies, while medical doctors are usually the second or third responders.

Paramedics are trained to stabilize patients and transport them to the hospital, while medical doctors are trained to diagnose and treat patients, often over a comparatively longer timeline.

Paramedic Studies Vs Medical School, What’s the Difference?

Paramedic Studies vs Medical School: What’s the Difference?

There are a few key differences between paramedic studies and medical school.

For one, medical school is much more expensive and takes longer to complete.

Medical school takes four to five years to complete, while paramedic studies can be completed in as little as two years.

In addition, the medical school will provide you with a more in-depth understanding of the human body and diseases, while paramedic studies will focus more on emergency care and treatment.

The time differences in training programmes are therefore warranted and expected.

While there is a shorter educational commitment for paramedics when compared to medical doctors, paramedics still receive comprehensive training in emergency medical care.

In addition to their classroom instruction, paramedics also complete clinical rotations similar to doctors in order to gain real-world experience.

Unlike trainee doctors, paramedics are required to have a full driving license to carry out their duties.

Earning

Trainee doctors can expect to earn around £30k a year, whilst paramedics start at around £26k annually.

This isn’t greatly different however a doctor’s salary can reach £100k annually at the consultant level, whereas a paramedic’s salary may top out at £35k annually.

Job satisfaction

There is no definitive answer to who derives more satisfaction from their work as it depends on the individual doctor or paramedic’s own personal experiences, outlook, and preferences.

However, in general, doctors tend to experience higher levels of job satisfaction than paramedics due to the higher levels of responsibility, autonomy, and prestige associated with the profession.

Paramedics, while still respected members of the medical community, often have less control over their work environment and may find themselves working long hours in stressful situations.

That being said, a certain subset of paramedics couldn’t be happier in their role.

They take pride in the fact that they are the first line of defence in potentially serious emergencies, and rightfully so!

Summary

Paramedic studies focus on emergency medical care, while medical school focuses on becoming a doctor.

This difference in focus can be seen in the types of exams that are required to become a paramedic.

So, which one is right for you?

If you’re interested in a career in emergency medicine, however, you don’t want to train for 5 years and be called junior for a further 2, then paramedic studies may be the way to go.

However, if you don’t mind studying for a while, or if you’re interested in a career in general medicine, then medical school is the better option.
