1. The Job Market Is Saturated

As a nutritional science graduate, your job prospects are relatively limited without doing another qualification or masters.

You may work as a food technologist, nutritionist, or sales rep for a private company.

Having done a master’s or additional qualification, you can work in health improvement, a community education officer, or a dietician.

The job market is saturated with these jobs that are often not well-funded, or not very stable.

These jobs also require experience which is hard to get right out of university.

The best thing is to use your transferrable skills in this degree to find roles in other related fields.

2. It’s Expensive

We all know that university is expensive.

The good thing is that government/student finance exists, and students don’t have to bare the weight of student debt immediately.

But what about the other costs associated with studying? Things like books, food, and housing can really add up.

And for a degree where your earnings after graduation isn’t great, it begs the question is all this worth it?

And if you’re not careful, you can easily find yourself in real debt especially if you need to commute to different locations for placements.

So be sure to budget carefully and don’t overspend.

3. It’s Time-Consuming

Studying for a nutritional science degree is time-consuming.

Like any other degree, vast amounts of content is covered, most of which you may never use after graduating.

5. You’re Not Guaranteed A Job In The Field

There are a lot of people who think that they’re guaranteed a job as a nutritionist or dietician just because they have a degree.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

Just because you have a degree in a certain field doesn’t mean that there are going to be jobs available in that field.

Sometimes you have to be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up.

Other times you might have to switch fields entirely. It’s important to be flexible and open-minded when it comes to your career.

The good news is while nutritional science is niche and specific, the actual contents of the degree are pretty diverse and will be a good basis for work in any healthcare or biology-related field.

While nutritional science offers students the opportunity to get a real understanding of the science behind the food we consume, the jobs market in the industry could be better.
